In the changing and sometimes volatile world in which organisations operate and do business, management accounting and management accountants are responsible for the costing, control, and performance information that support management decision-making; the optimising of organisational performance; and the managing of business risk exposure. The strategic choices of these organisations determine the sources and types of relationships that organisations will engage in, both within their internal operating environments and their external business environments.

Organisations have a greater capacity to control their internal operating relationships (whether these are organisation to people, people to people, people to physical assets, or physical assets to physical assets) than they do their external business relationships, which have different sources and types of uncertainty and risk.

In this book, the focus is on the internal operating environment of the organisation. It looks at how management accounting tools, techniques, and frameworks assist management accountants to identify the information and reporting needs of management for managing and treating various sources and types of internal operating uncertainty and risk, so as to optimise organisation performance.

About the Author(s)
John Bradshaw (BEd (Ter), MCom, CFA, CMA, AFNZIM) specialises in teaching management accounting and has taught and been an examiner in the MBA, MCA, BCA(Hons), and BCA programmes. His research and consultancy interests are in the areas of management accounting and management control systems, with a specific interest in performance measurement and management.

Carolyn Fowler (MCom, PhD, CA, CMA) teaches in the management accounting, accounting information systems and accounting history areas at both the undergraduate and post graduate levels at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW), New Zealand. Her research interests cover accounting education, nineteenth century accounting history and developments in information technology and management accounting.

Chris Hunt (BFin.Admin, MEc, PhD, FCPA) teaches management accounting at undergraduate and post graduate levels at Victoria University of Wellington (VUW), New Zealand. His research interest area is performance and risk management. He has 15 years’ experience working as a senior manager in both public and private sectors, balanced by 15 years’ academic teaching experience.

Bhagwan Khanna (MCom, MBA, PhD, CMA (USA), CA) has been in teaching for over 40 years and has held the position of visiting professor (management accounting and international accounting) at universities in Europe, USA and India. He has presented papers at international conferences and published articles in professional and academic journals. The book Practical Costing that he co-authored in 1971 is still selling in the overseas market (5th edition).
