Welcome to The Ledger!

As far as I know theres no accurate answer to your question but based on what I have seen and heard speaking with various business owners and software reps I'd say that right now MYOB would be the most popular accounting and small business software in New Zealand. Followed closely by QuickBooks.

Keep an eye out for the new breed of accounting solutions which come in the form of online services such as Xero and iCashBook. These guys are definitely worth checking out. Price wise, they absolutely smoke the competition, especially iCashBook, as it's super simple to use with nearly no learning curve involved.

Hope that helps.

I would go with Quickbooks

I would go with Quickbooks too. It's easy to learn and it works really well for small business. It is what I use now. I used to use a peachtree accounting software, but switched to Quickbooks.

Oh! wow that is expensive.

Oh! wow that is expensive. But is it a once off payment or would you get f*ree upgrades and tech support for that, I wonder.
I am looking at this from a small business point of view, but maybe larger business may need the extras that this software offers.

Yes, for that sort of money I

Yes, for that sort of money I would expect the software to cook my breakfast in the mornings as well as manage my books:)

I've only ever experienced

I've only ever experienced MYOB but it is really easy to use and I think you'll find most small businesses use that. Also, if you end up hiring someone in the future, there is a good chance they've used it before.
